360° Images of Fuel Treatments

This web map gives you an immersive view of fuel treatments across Southcentral Alaska. Embedded 360-degree images and videos let you pan with the mouse in any direction, giving a full picture of what different treatments look like. The map includes new and old treatments, as well as untreated areas, letting you see how treatments evolve and grow back over time. Currently, the map displays 30 100-meter photo/video walkthroughs. These span 9 proposed or existing fuel treatment areas in the Municipality of Anchorage and Kenai Peninsula Borough, along 3 recent fire scars. Many fuel treatments include multiple walkthroughs to show differences within a single area, while some include both pre- and post-treatment photos. Additionally, photos from around 70 preset fuel monitoring points near Sterling, set by the Fish and Wildlife Service, are available.

How to Use

To change the web map view, tap and drag to move the map, and pinch or scroll to zoom in or out. The default view shows all locations with 360-imagery. Many more fuel treatments are in Alaska. To choose your desired basemap, go to the box in the top right and select an option. Fuel treatment locations are color-coded; click the legend box in the bottom right corner to view the color legend. To view 360° images of a fuel treatment, tap a color-coded circle and drag the image to view it from different directions. To view 360° walkthrough videos, tap the orange line next to a set of images. By default, the view of the video cannot be changed, but if you open the video in a new YouTube tab you can change direction. You can toggle image and video visibility in the upper-right panel to make it easier to see and reach the desired one. You can also make the map fullscreen via the button in the top left if you so desire. We also have the YouTube videos below.

Municipality of Anchorage: Abbott Loop Park Fuel Treatment (5 walkthroughs, 3 with pre/post treatment images), Basher Road/Campbell Airstrip Road Fuel Treatment (4 walkthroughs), Hilltop-Prospect East-West Connector (3 walkthroughs), South Basher/Stuckagain Heights Treatment (2 walkthroughs), Hilltop Gasline (2 walkthroughs), Sahalee Subdivision (1 walkthrough), Heights Hill Road (1 walkthrough), Hiland Road (untreated, 2 walkthroughs), fire scars near 100th Street and Goose Lake Park (untreated, 2 walkthroughs).

Kenai Peninsula Borough: Kenai Strategic Fuel Treatment (5 walkthroughs, three near Three Johns Road, one near Moose River, and one near the Grandview Fire scar, along with 70 preset monitoring points in the same area)

Fairbanks North Star Borough: McCloud Subdivision (2 walkthroughs), Old Murphy Dome (2 walkthroughs), and Fox (2 walkthroughs) fuel treatments.

Methods

Springer Moore, Ed Graham, Jen Schmidt, and Adina Salant took photos and videos between May and September 2026 using an Insta360 X5 camera and an EOS Arrow 100 sub-meter GPS for geolocation. Springer Moore created the web map using the JavaScript library Leaflet, and Ed Graham updates it.
